Antibiotics are a cornerstone of modern medicine and remain the only way to treat a bacterial disease; there is no alternative. Their importance to human and animal health cannot be understated, and the need to effectively address antimicrobial is of vital importance for our shared future. This is why the European veterinary, farmer and animal health associations came together to create the European Platform for Responsible Use of Medicines in Animals – EPRUMA – back in 2005, to be part of the solution by promoting responsible use and sharing best practices for animal health. Complementary actions are needed to improve health, reduce the need for antibiotics, research transfer pathways, and strengthen surveillance across all domains.

Ensuring a true One Health approach to addressing the silent pandemic of antimicrobial resistance starts with greater dialogue between animal and human health counterparts, and also with the environmental sector. The objective of this event is to first ensure a connection and understanding between human and animal health professionals of how far each sector has progressed in ensuring the responsible use of antibiotics, and to discuss how to move forward with a One Health mindset.
